Lonely Planet
East Africa’s Raptor Heartland
Kenya is one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations—and a true stronghold for diurnal raptors. Over 90 species of raptors occur here, including resident specialists, intra-African migrants, and Palearctic visitors. The country’s breathtaking variety of habitats—from arid savannas and soda lakes to montane forests and volcanic landscapes—supports one of the most diverse raptor communities in the world.
This tour is designed to showcase the best of Kenya’s birds of prey alongside its legendary big game. We’ll visit top birding and safari locations including Lake Baringo, a hotspot for owls, nightjars, and cliff-dwelling eagles; Lake Nakuru, where flamingos and fish eagles share the water with rhinos and lions; and Nairobi National Park, uniquely set right on the edge of the capital city.
We’ll also explore the vast landscapes of Tsavo East and West, home to “red elephants,” Bateleurs, and bushland specialties, and wind through Amboseli National Park, famous for its elephant herds and dramatic views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Here we expect to encounter such highlights as Martial Eagle, Secretarybird, Verreaux’s Eagle, Pygmy Falcon, and Eastern Chanting Goshawk—alongside many of Kenya’s iconic mammals.
This ambitious safari targets 60+ species of diurnal raptors including 16 eagles, snake-, and fish-eagles, 13 true falcons, 7 vultures, 6 accipiters, 4 harriers, 4 kites, and many more, "Africa's Big Five"—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo—offering world-class photographic opportunities, memorable wildlife encounters, and a deep dive into East Africa’s spectacular birdlife and staggering raptor diversity.
